Time is right for France rugby team to emulate Les Bleus with a World Cup triumph

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:06:33 GMT

PARIS (AP) — Winning the World Cup for the first time in October would finally elevate France’s rugby team alongside the more illustrious Les Bleus in terms of nationwide standing. It’s an old debate in France: Which is really the national sport, soccer or rugby? The soccer team is more successful in the international arena after winning two World Cups, two European Championships and reaching three other major finals. But while soccer fans quickly fall out of love with their national team, rugby supporters have tended to remain loyal and the atmosphere more passionate at Stade de France. The rugby crowd is as quick to cheer France as it is to drown the stadium in whistles if things start going badly. There was a lot of whistling in the previous decade but the passionate support endured and was rewarded last year with a 10th Grand Slam in Six Nations history and the world No. 1 ranking.Playing a World Cup on home soil will give France, three times a runner-up at rugby’...

Browns’ commitment, confidence in Cade York appears more shaken after kicker’s latest miss

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:06:33 GMT

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cade York may no longer have a powerful leg to stand on with the Browns.York’s struggles this summer have eroded Cleveland’s confidence in him and coach Kevin Stefanski’s failure to commit to the second-year kicker for the season opener has raised more questions about his future.Despite York’s misses in exhibition games, the Browns had been adamantly supporting York, a fifth-round draft pick who had an underwhelming rookie season in 2022.That changed Sunday. After York missed an extra point (it was nullified by penalty) and had a late field-goal attempt blocked (it looked low) in a 33-32 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Stefanski was asked if the 22-year-old will be Cleveland’s kicker in the Sept. 10 opener against Cincinnati. He didn’t say yes. He didn’t say no.“We always keep those internal as we get through this week,” Stefanski said on a Zoom call. ”But I’ll reiterate I think Cade is very, very talented.”Talent has never be...

All 30 managers that started the MLB season are still employed, but the axe could be coming soon

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:06:33 GMT

It’s five months into the regular season and all 30 Major League Baseball managers that started the year with their respective teams are all still employed. That’s fairly rare, but not totally uncommon. The axe could be coming soon. Here’s a look at some of the managers who are in a tenuous position as the season winds down.— Aaron Boone, New York Yankees: This is Boone’s sixth season and the previous five were all very good. But the Yankees have fallen to last place in the AL East with a 62-68 record, GM Brian Cashman called the season a “disaster” and it’s fair to say that patience isn’t always the best virtue for teams in the Big Apple. The Yankees haven’t had a losing season since 1992.— Buck Showalter, New York Mets: The 67-year-old had the Midas touch in 2022, leading the Mets to 101 wins before a disappointing wild-card round exit against the San Diego Padres. Another big season was expected after owner Steve Cohen spent huge on the tea...

(CNN) — The connections people experience with their loved ones don’t necessarily end after death, a recent Pew Research Center survey’s results suggest.Just over half of 5,079 surveyed American adults – 53% – reported ever having been visited by a dead relative in dreams “or some other form,” according to the survey results released Wednesday. And 44% of respondents said they’ve experienced at least one of these three encounters in the past year: feeling a dead relative’s presence, telling a late family member about their lives or having a deceased relative communicate with them, according to Pew Research Center. The center conducted the survey among its American Trends Panel members between March 27 and April 2. The survey included responses from “Americans of all religious backgrounds,” including Buddhists, Jews and Muslims, the center said. The results showed moderately religious people – measured partly by how often they attend religious services and whether they said th...

In Bulgaria, demise of ex-top prosecutor raises questions about judicial reform

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:06:33 GMT

SOFIA — At the beginning of July, Bulgaria’s former chief prosecutor, who rarely took questions while in office, turned to Facebook Live. As Ivan Geshev read awkwardly from the teleprompter, staring stiffly into the camera, he announced plans to establish a new movement, Justice for Bulgaria — the first step, some said, to him entering politics. Geshev, who once referred to himself once as “an instrument in the hands of God” and was dismissed as the top prosecutor in June, plodded through his speech, not referring to the years of protests and public outcry about his cozying up to oligarchs and corrupt politicians while in office, and his failure to investigate high-ranking graft. This attempted return to public life by Geshev so swiftly after he was ousted as prosecutor was another outlandish moment as the new government — which has made no secret of its dislike for him — aimed to course-correct years of stagnation, and as it agreed to focus on eliminating corruption among ...

Macron: EU should consider ‘multi-speed Europe’ to cope with enlargement

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:06:33 GMT

PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday the EU should “maybe” evolve toward a “multi-speed” union as it considers integrating Ukraine, Moldova and countries in the Western Balkans.Macron said the EU needs to reform if it wants to integrate new nations and has to build consensus with more than 30 member countries.“The risk is to think we can enlarge without reform. I can testify that it is hard enough for Europe to advance on sensitive topics with 27 members. With 32 or 35 members, it won’t be any easier,” he said at the annual gathering of French ambassadors in Paris.“We’ll need audacity, to accept more integration in some areas and maybe even a multi-speed Europe,” he said. The French president did not elaborate on how this multi-speed Europe would function, but added that an overhaul of EU procedures was necessary for bloc to deepening and maintain “its attractiveness.” According to several Fren...
